The Photographic Gallery, New York, hosts 
The Tibet Show Benefit Exhibition and Cultural Evening

From September 16-24, 2006, four talented photographers celebrate the culture of Tibet at The Tibet Show, an exhibition and fundraiser for The Tibet Fund at The Photographic Gallery in downtown New York, 

Teru Kuwayama, Sonam Zoksang, Jesse Pesta, Steve McCurry, Ellen Kaplowitz  and Jennifer MacFarlane are exhibiting images from Tibet, Nepal and North India reflecting the cultural, religious and national identity of the Tibetan people. In support of the Tibetan community, these photographers aim to raise awareness and money for The Tibet Fund, a 501 3(c) non-profit organization.  

On the exhibition’s opening night it will host a performance from Tibetan Folk singer Tenzin Kunsel and a talk by the respected President of the Tibet Fund, Rinchen Dharlo. Hospitality for the evening has been generously donated by  How Sweet It Is Bakery, providing Tibetan themed petit fours, Original Sin Cider, East Village Cheese, Studio Sweet Pea and Vision Of Tibet. Limited edition prints will be on sale at the gallery by credit card and for online purchase at www.benefitevents.com until October 16, 2006.. Prints size 16x20 and larger will be on sale starting from $600 with smaller prints for $150 and $30.  Noted Photographer Steve McCurry has also donated one of his photographs to this benefit.

Teru Kuwayama has worked extensively in Asia and the Middle East, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Tibet, Kashmir, Iraq, and Cambodia. He has also covered stories in the U.S. and Africa and is a contributor to such publications as Life, Outside, National Geographic, Doubletake, Newsweek and Fortune.

Steve McCurry, recognized universally as one of today's finest image makers, has won many of photography's top awards. Best known for his evocative color photography, McCurry, in the finest documentary tradition, captures the essence of human struggle and joy. A member of Magnum Photos since 1986, McCurry has sought and found the unforgettable; many of his images have become modern icons.

Jennifer MacFarlane, Curator/Photographer, New York-born photographer has traveled extensively, and has published photographs from Tibet, Cambodia, and Iceland. In 2005, she organized the hugely successful “Spice”, a benefit photographic exhibition of photographs of Asia, which raised $30,000 for non-profit organization, Architecture for Humanity, in response to the 2004 Tsunami

Sonam Zoksang, was born in Tibet and came to New York with his Benares English teacher in 1983. He considers his photo documentation of Tibet and the exiled Tibetan community to be the most important work of his career thus far. He has made many trips to photograph daily life inside Tibet under Chinese occupation.

Jesse Pesta is an Indiana born journalist and photographer. His interest in Tibet grew while he was based in New Delhi as the South Asia correspondent for the Wall Street Journal.

Ellen Kaplowitz has traveled around the world for 20 years photographing people and places in order to document these cultures before what is unique to them is lost. Included in this body of work are images of: China's Miao people; the installment of the King of Kumasi, Ghana; her trek to the base camp of Mt. Everest; and composer Tan Dun performing his world-famous piece, The Map, in China's Hunan province. In addition are images of Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, India, Libya and Ethiopia. Kaplowitz is currently working on a book of Tibetan nomadic life and festivals in Eastern Tibet. 

Her images are shown in many galleries, including Plum Blossoms, New York and Carl Schlosberg's Fine Arts, Los Angeles. Kaplowitz has exhibited in many museums, including The Field Museum, The Newark Museum, The Carnegie Museum of Natural History, The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology, Museum for African Art. Recently, her photographs appeared in the Vietnam exhibition at The American Museum of Natural History in New York. 

The Tibet Fund is a primary non-profit organization dedicated to helping Tibetans improve their lives and preserve their distinct cultural, religious and national identity.
